Outdoor School

May 7, 2012

Dear Parents,

As many of you are aware, Outdoor School for the grade 3's, as well as the grade 2's, is fast approaching. Our dates are Monday June 4 to Wed. June 6. As a result of much discussion, we have decided on Wed. May 16 at 1:50 pm as our parent meeting time. It is an opportunity for parents of those who have not had children go before to get some information, and parents who have, to get some refreshing. There will be a package with details, as well as forms to fill out. We hope you are able to attend.

Outdoor School is a wonderful opportunity for the children, both in their interactions with each other, and their environment.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Kam

Math

May 7, 2012

Just a heads up that we will be moving forward into a unit on division, and then going into fractions. Even as we do that, it is a good idea continue to practice our multiplication skills and skip counting, even in the form of games, so it stays fresh. If you need suggestions on some math games to try at home with your child, please let us know.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Kam

QUIZ ON PROVINCE AND CAPITALS

 Dear Parents,

Quiz - Your child should bring home a sheet today listing the provinces and territories along with their capitals.

Here is a list in case your child left the paper at school.

British Columbia - Victoria
Alberta - Edmonton
Saskatchewan - Regina
Manitoba - Winnipeg
Ontario - Toronto
Quebec - Quebec City
New Brunswick - Fredericton
Nova Scotia - Halifax
Prince Edward Island - Charlottetown
Newfoundland and Labrador - St. John's
Yukon - Whitehorse
Northwest Territories - Yellowknife
Nunavut - Iqaluit

On the quiz, I will write either the province/capital or the capital and the student will have to write the matching province/territory or capital.  Spelling really doesn't count.  I should be able to understand what the student tried to write.

There will be two more quizes on provinces/territories and capitals.  Next Thursday, May 10 I will write the provinces/territories and the students will need to write the capitals.  Then May 17, I will write the capitals and the students need to write the provinces/territories.  The reason for this is so the students don't memorize the provinces/territories and capitals once and forget it.  Also, if the student is having an off day on May 3rd quiz, he/she will have a chance to make up for it with the other quizes.

Heritage projects - Thursday, May 3 is the last day for the Heritage projects.  The project was to give students an understanding on how to place headings, information and photos/pictures on a poster.  Students will also do a quick oral presentation on their project.

Take care,

Multicultural Lunch and Activity

Dear Parents,

A big thank you to my parent helpers for helping set up for  our luncheon on Wednesday.

In addition, the variety of foods students brought were a hit and a success! In the afternoon, students worked together in their home teams to each produce a torn paper flag, which will be on display.

Upcoming:

Just to let you know that class photos are going to be happening this Tuesday, May 1.

KM Club- will be continuing through the month of May, so please continue to have your child dress accordingly for the weather on those days.

Monday April 30 is our last swimming lesson. Thank you again to all of the parent helpers that made this possible.

Multicultural Activity this week

April 23, 2012

Dear Parents,

As sent out in a recent Brooksbank email, we are having a multicultural lunch to go with our multiage activity on Wed. Apr. 25 and we are looking for at least 2 parents to come in to our class to assist. The lunch will be at about 12:10, but there will be an assembly previous to that, and setup will need to happen during that time. Please let me know if you are available to help out.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Kam

UPCOMING WORK

 Hi Everyone,

|This term will be quite busy for the students.

Social Studies - This term we are studying Canada.  The students will have to know the provinces, territories and their capitals.  They will also have to identify the major bodies of water in Canada such as Hudson Bay and the five great lakes.  Also, students will have to recognize and identify Canadian symbols such as the beaver, the Canadian flag and the R.C.M.P.  Unfortunately, this term there will be a major project.  The students will pick a province and create a poster.  The project will not be due until the beginning of June.

On Friday, April 27 there is a title page due and the topic is Canada.  Each student has the criteria.  If you need a copy, just come on by and I'll give you one.  The pictures can be very neatly drawn and coloured, from a computer or from a magazine.  As a class, we have gone over how to do the project and how long it should take.  The class has seen an example.  It should not be left for the day before it is due.

The first test in Socials will be on May 3.  They will need to know the provinces, the territories and their capitals.

Language Arts - In journals, students will start to write stories.  We will focus on one part of the story at a time - the beginning, the middle or the end.

Little Red Hen - Currently, the class  is working together on their version of "The Little Red Hen".  This hen lives in the jungle and makes coconut cream pie and smoothies for her friends.

Art - This term, we will be looking at different types of radial art.  This art focuses on symmetry and repetion.

As you can see, it will be exciting and busy term.

Take care,

Laura Faganello

TEST RUN

 April 2, 2012

Dear Parents,

A big thanks to those of you that were able to step in at the last minute to help drive for our swimming lessons! The kids really enjoyed their first day, and I'm sure look forward to more time in the pool today.

A reminder also that this upcoming Friday and Monday, there will be no school due to the Easter weekend.

This month, students are also going to be doing some dance, and we will be having a specialist come in to work with all classes for a few sessions towards the end of the month

KM Club- will be starting April 11, during class time as we have done previously, so we are hoping for some nice weather!

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Kam
